Copper in agate (lacquered slab) Calumet & Hecla Mine #21 , Calumet, Calumet Township, Houghton Co., Michigan, USA 5.5 x 4.3 x 0.9 cm An underground copper mine consisting of 96 levels with 16 incline shafts and one vertical shaft (Red Jacket). Formed from the consolidation of the Calumet, Hecla, Portland, and Scott Mining Cos. in 1871. In 1923 the Allouez, Ahmeek, Centennial, Calumet and Hecla, and Osceola Mining Cos. merged to form the Calumet and Hecla Consolidated Copper Mining Co. All operations ceased in 1968 following a labor strike. Excellent mineral collecting, especially at #9, 10, and 12. ref mindat.org (Author: Don Lum)
